| PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEM | ARCHIVES TWO |
| (CD, City Slang / Labels)
To put it bluntly Planetary Assault Systems is the guise under which Luke Slater produces his interesting tracks. Here he doesn't let musical fashion dictate his muse, as on his more album-orientated tracks; here his muse is the harsh mistress of the dancefloor. Most of the nine tracks collected on Archives Two are undeniable DJ-tools, the sort of tracks that really have an extended life on 12-inches, in the clubs, before retiring to the cd-compilation. 'Searchin' is exemplary: a stuttering melody that spirals in search of a beat which it, guided by two additional melodies, finally finds. 'Gruve' tries an atmospheric approach, a long minimal track with hints of dread, for those essential valleys in the mix that make the dancers feel a bit cold. Another great track, 'Forms', features a strange call-and-response between something sounding like an alien skippy ball and a slivering water creature. Both 'Take Back' and 'Booster (Surgeon remix)' are long build-up tracks that need a DJ's hands to connect them to another record in order to release their energy. Less impressive are the three down tempo tracks featured here: 'The Return' is sub-Aphex Twin, 'You Though It' is a pleasurable if anachronistic slice of Blade Runner trip hop and album closing track 'The Parting' is the absence of tension, concentration failing after a night out, thoughts dissolving.
Undeniable highlight of the collection is the 11 minute-long 'Angel Street', a dirty rolling epic of deep acid rumbles running against another high-pitched acid melody. Utterly danceable and seemingly interminable, a space opening up wherein thought can truly get lost. Archives Two is full-bodied techno for the connoisseurs of dance.
