(CD, Tresor / EFA)
Over the years, Tresor have quietly released some outstanding mix CDs under
the Globus Mix flag. Protecting the high quality control of Tresor, new
chapters are not rushed: Dave Tarrida's album is the long-awaited follow-up to
Herbert's classic Let's Make Mistakes mix released back in 2000. That
album was to be Herbert's breakthrough into dance music's limelight, and on
the evidence of this mix CD, Dave Tarrida could well be up for the same
treatment. But forget Herbert. This mix comes from a different sound
galaxy: Here the natural laws of bass rule life. Tarrida, over the course of 23
tracks,
undertakes something of an archeology of bass in techno, tracing the
influences of Reese, the Energy Flash, the Dominator bass, and a number
of other classic, stomach-turning, low-end frequencies. The result is a mix
that eschews pretension for sheer fun: Tarrida mixes fast, looking for nice
intersections and unsuspected rubs, even if taking a risk means
occasionally giving up technical perfection. Over 74 minutes, you'll find
no weak track, yet plenty of highlights, such as Smash TV's I Love You,
Anthony Lynn's Substances Illicites, a true rave classic in the form of The
Mover's Frontal Sickness, and the absolute jewel in the collection that is
Digital Princezz Out Of Focus, a lovely tune in old-school Detroit style,
where first the voice really goes out of focus, followed by the accent of
the singer. Clever. Don't let the dark titles intimidate you too much. Or
better, realize that the best dance music always has a dark edge to it.
