ABOUT SOCIOLOGY

Sociology is a way of seeing. Sadly it also is a form of knowledge that is often misunderstood and underrated. Every sociologist has very specific ideas on what sociology ought to be and I am no exception. One often voiced (self)criticism of sociology states that for a scientific discipline it tends to be too speculative and not bound to an universal method. This implicated weakness should be transformed into the great strength of sociology, a speculative science which is able to make everything into its object of interest. There are interesting parallels between sociology and science fiction, which hopefully can be investigated in more detail in the near future. Science of fiction for a long time has known the same inferior complex regarding "real" literature as sociology in regards of "real" science. Yet science fiction is also a form of sociology with which society dream itself into the future.
