ABOUT MUSIC
Ever since the birth of the gramophone music has become an explicit technological phenomenon. Revolutions in popular music are forced by technology hardly ever through lyrics: Dylan goes electric, Hendrix disappears into the studio, dub's studio-as-instrument approach. With Kraftwerk an essential step is completed: technology itself becomes the subject of music. It is a step that made us enter an era which we inhabit to this day. In the nineties music, led by House, has grown into a speculative fiction (sonic fiction as Kodwo Eshun puts it) that fictionalizes and mythologizes our relationship with technology. Good music carries ideas, inspires and seduces thinking into following new paths. That's why writing and reading about music can be such an important part of the musical experience.
